Pedal-n-play for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to deter Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (ADRDs)

The NIA-funded, fully remote, clinical trial of our pedal-n-play iPACES (interactive Physical and Cognitive Exercise System) has been evaluating the cognitive benefits for MCI of regular neuro-exergaming. The study aims to provide to up to 120 homes: an under-the-desk elliptical, a tablet, and a heart rate monitor. Participants first enrolled during the COVID pandemic and all components of the study are completed from the convience of home (e.g., questionnaires, brain teaser tasks, etc.). Exercise with iPACES starts slow for at least 20 minutes three times a week, slowly building up to 45 minutes five times a week. Cognitive and biomarker outcomes are evaluated along a one-year timeline. Participants are randomly assigned to either iPACES or synchronous, but non-interactive physical and cognitive exercise using the same equipment. Co-residing MCI-caregiver pairs as well as solo individuals ages 50 and up have been invited to participate in this study.
